A pleasant Friday saw the Greenway Takeover Festival continue into the second day of its four-day span.

Thursday night saw Tim Mahoney take the stage, with Cherry Poppin’ Daddies headlining Friday night, and Everclear waiting in the wings to hit the stage Saturday night. The event winds down with Wild Hands on the main stage Sunday evening.

A fun feature of the event Saturday, Sept. 7, will see the Grand Forks Central High School choir sing a song with Everclear.

“Art (Alexakis), the lead singer, is super excited about it, which I think is just awesome,” said event organizer, Tricia Lunski, who, along with her husband, Jamie, own HB Sound and Light.

The Greenway Takeover will feature a number of food trucks, 12 in all, and alcohol will be served, though attendees who wish to buy a drink will need to have a wristband.

In addition to games such as corn hole, a giant chess set and pool soccer, there also will be a stunt jump. The paid attraction allows thrill-seekers the chance to jump from a distance of 20 feet above the ground into an air-filled pillow.

“New this year is the stunt jump,” said Lunski. “You climb 20 feet up, and you jump onto a pillow of air. It doesn’t seem that high until you get up there. Everyone who does it says it’s pretty amazing. I haven’t tried it yet,” she said, adding that she “might” give it a try.

In addition to the headliners, local bands, such as Project: Constellation (Friday), PeatMoss and the Spreaders (Saturday) and Penumbra (Sunday) are also featured at the Takeover.

Plenty of family friendly events are scheduled as well, including Story Time, presented by the Grand Forks Library and a puppet show, put on by Firehall Theater. Altru Health System will have a yoga activity, with all three of those events taking place on Saturday.

Hope Covenant Church will have an ecumenical service in a tent at the festival at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

“I’m looking forward to the food; it seems like they have a lot of trucks out here,” said Brad Bunz, attending from Grand Forks Air Force Base with other members of his shop. He added that he may be back Saturday to see Everclear.

Justin Bigham and his wife, Jennifer, also from the Air Force Base, were attending the Takeover Festival Friday as well.

“We just got out of work for the day; our shop came out here and (we are) just enjoying the day,” said Bigham. “We’re just kind of hanging out and enjoying the good weather while we still can.”

HB Sound and Light also began a grant program to support other groups wishing to perform at the festival.

“New this year we started a grant program,” said Lunski. “I think that’s going to add another level of something to do. North Dakota Ballet Company got a grant, and the Empire Theater Company. They are going to put on a show. That was kind of our goal, is that you come down to see Everclear, but you see the Empire Theater Company. Maybe you didn’t know about the Empire Theater Company, and you could check them out.”

Gates to the Greenway Takeover Festival will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free before 6 p.m. and $5 after. Attendees who enter before 6 p.m. can get a stamp and freely exit and enter the festival.
