The University of Iowa is making a leadership change in its men’s basketball program, Athletic Director Beth Goetz announced Friday.

“Fran McCaffery has been an integral part of our Hawkeye family for the past 15 years. His dedication to our student-athletes and passion for the game will have a lasting impact,” Goetz said.

McCaffery leaves as Iowa’s all-time winningest coach with 297 victories, including a program-best 143 Big Ten wins. He led the Hawkeyes to seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament. His tenure also saw four consensus All-Americans and two National Players of the Year in Luka Garza.

Iowa will begin a national search for McCaffery’s replacement immediately.

ESPN first reported the news Friday, citing sources. The announcement follows Iowa’s 106-94 loss to Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament, which ended the season with a 17-16 record.
