With a line-up of kid friendly shows, gravity defying acrobatics, big named concerts and gore infused theatre this year’s performance schedule at the Shell Theatre is an ambitious one.

“I’m really looking forward to the variety that we’re bringing in,” said Josh Gennings the Theatre Supervisor.

The season kicks off on Thursday with country music star Aaron Pritchett playing to a full crowd with guests Kira Isabella and David James. Then on Saturday is the kid friendly show TerZettto which tells the tale of three clowns attempting get along and understand one another.

“They’re just amazing performers and it’s a great show good for all ages,” said Gennings about the TerZettto clowns. He added that the beauty of clowning is the fact that they can convey numerous emotions and complicated concepts through exaggerated motions.

“90 per cent of what they do is without sound,” he said.

Later in October the programming moves from child friendly to adult only with the Element Theatre Company’s production of Evil Dead the Musical.

“It has got the blood, it has got the gore,” said Gennings.

In November the Royal Canadian Legion No. 27 presents Jakes Gift which also happens to be taking place on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. In this production a reluctant veteran returns to Normandy, France.

Gennings said the one he’s looking forward to most though is November’s production of Backbone put on by Gravity & Other Myths. The group hails from Australia and is the largest show ever held at the Shell Theatre.

“We’re going to have to take the entire theatre apart to make this one fit, but we really think it’s worth it.”

Backbone has been compared to other acrobatic shows like Cirque du Soleil and is one of the first international shows being held right in Fort Saskatchewan.

The season also boasts a number of musical performances by Burton Cummings, Ian Sherwood, Barney Bentall & The Cariboo Express, Joe Nolan with Braden Gates, Serena Ryder, Michelle Wright, Steven Page, Oscar Lopez, Matt Andersen, Heather Rankin, VC2, Molly Johnson, Boom, and WiL.

Theatrical performances include Jack and the Beanstalk, Alex ‘The Zaniac’ Zerbe, Rare Form Theatre’s Jack of Diamonds, Anne of Green Gables ballet

The theatre is also putting on a new rock series celebrating music’s history with nights dedicated to specific bands and albums. The series kicks off in November with a night of celebrating Pink Floyd’s iconic album The Wall.

The next show is TerZettto on Saturday at 2 p.m.
