Vancouver audiences finally have the chance to see one of local choreographic star Crystal Pite's most celebrated works.

Next Monday (June 24) at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday (June 27) at 2 p.m., the Vancity Theatre is screening Royal Opera House presents 3 Ballets, a film of three works: her acclaimed Flight Pattern, along with Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour and Belgian-Moroccan Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's Medusa. The Royal Ballet performed the triple bill in May.

Pite will be in attendance for a Q&A on the 24th.

Inspired by the Syrian refugee crisis, the 2018 work was Pite's first creation for London's Royal Ballet. It went on to win a coveted 2018 Laurence Olivier Award--the U.K.'s answer to the Tony awards--for best new dance production.

The production was also historic because it marked the first time a woman had choreographed for Covent Garden’s main stage this century.

Pite, who has taken work like Betroffenheit and Revisor around the globe, has also choreographed for Ballet BC, the Paris Opera Ballet, and Nederlands Dans Theater. She bases her own company, Kidd Pivot, out of Vancouver.

The Guardian's five-star review of Flight Pattern called it a "sombre and deeply affecting" piece that "throws open vast enfilades of inquiry and feeling".

Set to Henryk Górecki’s mournful Third Symphony, it features a swaying group of grey-clad figures--a wave of humanity, despairing, struggling, and ever-shifting.

As of press time, the Monday show had sold out and the theatre was preparing to release tickets for the Thursday screening
