HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama Youth Ballet Theatre is getting ready to present the Nutcracker, A Yuletide Ballet for the 12th season.

Be transported to a magical holiday wonderland filled with adorable children, dancing dolls, marching toy soldiers, mischievous mice, sparkling snowflakes, and the delicious Land of Sweets.

Our very own Greg Screws will be playing  Mother Ginger, a very special role guaranteed to “bring down the gingerbread house!” Greg is no stranger to treading the boards, you don’t want to miss this!

“Often I’ve been asked to play a small role in local theatre productions. Once I played a priest in Ars Nova’s The Magic Flute. Me playing a priest proved that God does have a sense of humor,” Greg joked. “Fantasy Playhouse does A Christmas Carol every year and I got to do the ‘Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.’ That was fun except I came dangerously close to flamethrowers and explosives. For a time, it was like being on stage during a KISS concert.”

“Alabama Youth Ballet asked me to play Mother Ginger in Nutcracker. It’s a blast. I basically have a small house put over where six dancers exit and perform on stage,” he said. “It’s a sweet production. The dancers are incredible and I’m struck always by how young they are. During a small break tonight, I talked with a teenager who has been dancing since six years of age. Many families are together during rehearsals and it looks to me like every fiber of every child’s being loves every second of it.”

“I’m lucky people ask me to do cool stuff. Darting in briefly for theatre productions is about the coolest thing I get to do. Nutcracker is set for Dec 1-3 at Lee High School. Curtain goes up at 7 p.m. and I really hope I don’t trip.”
